How much time will I have to commit?

It depends. There is a range of volunteer roles requiring different amounts of time – from continuous 2-5 hours a week- few hours a month- to one-off projects. We can work around you, based on your availability. Volunteer commitment varies – usually depending upon how much time volunteers can give and the role requirements.

Can I volunteer if I work full time?

Yes. Most of our team members who work full time find time to volunteer during the evening or on weekends. Some even have the support of their employers to be involved in short-term or one-off projects.

Can I select which department I wish to volunteer in?

Yes, you can. Our facilitators consider few factors before guiding you in any role i.e. your availability, skills, knowledge and experience. However, we do want this to be enjoyable and learning experience hence if you willing to learn new skills or taking up different challenging role, we will certainly support you.

How do I become a volunteer?

Contact Sikh Helpline on volunteer@sikhhelpline.com.au or submit an inquiry on our website and a facilitator will contact you with information on how to proceed with joining the team.

What kind of support is available to volunteers?

The Volunteer Facilitator and team Coordinator will provide ongoing support to the volunteers and participants. The Coordinator holds regular catch-ups for volunteers which provide an informal opportunity for people to chat, enjoy a coffee or tea and share their experiences. We will be planning regular get-togethers for participants and volunteers and a regular newsletter. Participants and volunteers can submit articles as well as keep up to date with community information and events.

Will i be provided with training?

We support all our volunteers with appropriate training. Training required depends on the role. Rest assured we will not expect you to commence in your role without the necessary information.
All Sikh Helpline volunteers are required to attend a face-to-face information session to help them understand the work and operations of Sikh Helpline.

Volunteers will also be informed about relevant training sessions external to Sikh Helpline, as well as provided with website links and fact sheets on relevant topics and issues.
Volunteers will be asked to continue to enhance their skills through experiential on the job learning. The training is massive benefit to everyone attending Sikh Helpline event (you may even end up using it outside the event), as well as meet other fellow volunteers.
